Project 1

October 14, 2008

I survived my first ever art critique! In retrospect I was so nervous about it that I never explained my story lines. I didn’t explain what my superpowers were or how they could be used. Never told them that my 100 year fantasy made me a best-selling author. Oh well!

The project was much harder than I originally anticipated. I blanked on creating a layout. I was expecting that I could lay out the page and create an image before writing the content. Much be from too much time spent creating pages in a content management system. Where the only thing you can really control is the content. The page’s layout has already been done for you! Anyway – by page three I realized that my expectations of being able to create a page layout before writing the content was unrealistic. It was an ah-ha moment when I realized how much easier it was to design the page AFTER creating the content.

Web 2.0

October 7, 2008

Being at the tail end of the boomers, I came of age during the dawn of the silicon era. Young enough to not fear the unknown (computers) but old enough to not grow up with one in my crib, house or even school. My first real exposure to computers was during my freshman year of college. As an accounting student I was introduced to the computer – card punch, reader and all. I was intrigued yet hesitate to delve into the world of programming that included punch cards! Over the summer the system was upgraded to a terminal base system and I signed up for my first programming course – FORTRAN.

My college computer experience put me ahead of the curve once I entered the work force. I learned how to operate many different systems, applications, and operating systems. Except for several additional programming language courses almost all of my computer knowledge has been trial by fire acquired.

So here I am many, many years later learning even more computer skills and feeling like a newbie. I typically use the web as a consumer, except for my job. The whole idea of user generated content is something I had limited experience with – however, i will learn this too!
